Technical Standards in Use at JPL

More than 2300 engineering standards (including specifications and handbooks) are in general use by NASA. They include over 70 NASA-issued standards; the remainder are standards issued by other government agencies or by the private sector.

The JPL-external standards in general use at JPL fall into 3 categories:

  1. Standards Imposed by the JPL Project Manager

Engineering standards and specifications issued outside of JPL are mandatory for use by JPL programs and projects only where they have been specifically mandated by the JPL program or project manager. (Exceptions to this include standards mandated by (1) legal or regulatory requirements, (2) NASA policy issuances that have been formally incorporated into the JPL Prime Contract, or (3) JPL Category A requirements documents.) Project-imposed standards may be flowed down to major system subcontractors, and JPL line organizations may also maintain local procedures and work instructions that reference JPL-external standards, specifications, and guidance documents.

  1. Standards Imposed by the JPL Prime Contract

The JPL Prime Contract (effective 2012 through 2017) conditionally mandates JPL use of the following standards and versions, but only to the extent specified in the Prime Contract:

The paragraph numbers listed above identify the specific location in the Prime Contract at which the respective standard is called out.

In addition, JPL maintains over 250 JPL specifications for use by JPL and its bidders and subcontractors.

  1. Standards Imposed in 'JPLRules!'

JPL Category A requirements documents maintained in the 'JPLRules!' repository call out the following externally-issued standards (or portions of them).* (Specifications and guidance documents have been omitted from the list for brevity.)

These documents may be queried by DocID number in the search field of the JPLRules! website.
